Using Disk Management to Create Simple Volumes

Getting Started

1. Open Disk Management

Disk Management has been a utility in Windows for a very long time. In most versions of Windows, you can just do a search for Disk Management, and it will come up.

2. Create New Simple Volume

Right click on the unallocated space you want to turn into a volume/partition and select New Simple Volume.

Click Next

Choose the size of the new volume, the default size is the maximum. Then press Next.

Assign the volume a drive letter and press Next.

Drive letters may not persist when moving the drive from one device to another.

Select the option for Format this volume with the following settings. You'll need to pick a File System, Allocation Unit size, and create a Volume Label.  You'll also want to make sure Perform a quick format is checked, a regular format is more thorough at removing data but takes much longer. Click Next, when ready.

Each File System has different benefits and purposes. You should research them before choosing.

Click Finish

You should now see the new volume in Disk Management and File Explorer.  It's ready to be used.
